Daily Reading Help for Students
Below is information from a December 2020 Microtraining/Inservice with help on how to inspire students to:
1) establish their own purpose for daily study by understanding its promise,
2) prayerfully setting daily scripture study goals,
3) deciding when and where to study and
4) deciding which study method to use.
Feel free to use this to inspire segments of your lessons, to use with Lesson 4 (Scripture Study) or in a FLEX Day lesson.

Principle:
On January of 2021, the reading requirement for seminary credit and graduation changed. One main purpose of this change is to align with the Come, Follow Me reading schedule.
The purpose of the daily scripture reading requirement is to emphasize for each student the importance of the word of God as they regularly strive to understand and rely on Jesus Christ and His teachings and Atonement. To help students achieve this purpose in their daily reading, teachers should encourage and help each student to set a personal scripture study goal. While setting and achieving a personal study goal is not tied to earning semester credit, having a scripture study goal will bring focus and purpose to the students’ scripture reading experience every day.
While reading the entire book of scripture is no longer a requirement for seminary graduation, teachers should encourage students to complete the weekly Come, Follow Me reading.
1) Help students establish their own purpose for daily scripture study by understanding promised blessings.
Principle:
If students understand and feel the importance of daily scripture study, they will be more likely to establish a habit that will bless them now and forever.
Purpose:
Help students establish their own purpose for daily scripture study by understanding promised blessings.
a. What do I want from my scripture study?
b. How will reading the scriptures daily strengthen my relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ?
c. What has the Lord promised me if I will study His word?

2) Encourage students to be prayerful in setting daily scripture study goals.

3) Assist students in deciding when and where to study the scriptures every day.
Principle:
If students have a set plan for when and where they will study the scriptures every day, they will be more likely to understand and rely on the atonement of Jesus Christ through daily scripture study.
Purpose:
Assist students in deciding when and where to study the scriptures every day.
a. When and where will I be able to most effectively study each day?
b. What elements help me focus better?
c. What elements make it harder to focus?

4) Help students decide which scripture study method to use.
Principle:
President Nelson said, “I suggest that you shape the style of your study to fit you” (“Living by Scriptural Guidance,” Ensign, Nov. 2000Links to an external site.). As students choose a scripture study method that meets their individual needs, they are more likely to be motivated and excited to accomplish their daily reading goal.
Purpose:
Help students decide which scripture study method to use.
a. Which scripture study method will stretch me but not overwhelm me?
b. Which scripture study method will help me fulfill my purpose for studying the scriptures?
